NX Studio 1.11.0 supports the Z9, Z8, Z6III, Z7II, Z6II, Z7, Z6, Z5IIC, Z5II, Z5, Zf, Z50II, Z50, Z30, Zfc and ZR, every DSLR from the D1 to the D780 plus the D6, all Nikon 1 cameras, COOLPIX models up to the P1100 and three KeyMission cameras. It reads NEF, NRW and NEFX RAW files, plus JPEG, TIFF, HEIF and MPO.

Z series mirrorless cameras

The NX Studio supported cameras list for 1.11.0 names sixteen Z series bodies: the Z9, Z8, Z6III, Z7II, Z6II, Z7, Z6, Z5IIC, Z5II, Z5, Zf, Z50II, Z50, Z30, Zfc and ZR. The Z5IIC is new in this release; it was the first change listed in the notes.

New bodies are usually added through a program update rather than a separate converter, so when a camera is brand new, the version on the vendor's download page is the one to install. The vendor notes that some models are not sold in every country.

DSLR, Nikon 1, COOLPIX and KeyMission

Opening files and transferring them are separate matters. The program reads pictures from all of these cameras, but Nikon Transfer 2 cannot talk to the COOLPIX 100, 300, 600, 700, 800, 880, 900, 910, 950 and 990, nor can those cameras or the D1, D1X and D1H be connected for transfer. Use a card reader for them.

  • Digital SLRs: all models from the D1 (1999) to the D780 (January 2020), plus the D6.
  • Nikon 1: all models from the V1 and J1 (2011) to the J5 (April 2015).
  • COOLPIX: all models from the COOLPIX E100 (1997) to the COOLPIX P1100.
  • KeyMission: the 360, 170 and 80.

Still image formats

The vendor describes these as formats shot with its own digital cameras or saved with its own software. RAW files from other camera brands are not on the list. If you need one editor for several brands, see the multi brand alternatives.

Video limits

For high end video formats you will need the camera maker's other tools or a dedicated video editor. Editing of any clip is handed to another application on the computer.

  • N-RAW (.NEV) and R3D NE (.R3D): no thumbnails, preview or playback.
  • ProRes RAW: no thumbnails, preview or playback.
  • ProRes 422 HQ: playback not supported.
  • H.265: playback needs a plugin; follow the prompt that appears.
  • ZR files saved with the camera's Video file naming feature: Nikon Transfer 2 cannot transfer them.

Practical tips

Transfer large shoots in smaller batches; the vendor warns that big transfers can take time. Connect the camera to a USB port on the computer itself, not a hub, and check the system requirements if a new camera's files will not open on an older system, because new camera support only comes in the current version.

Frequently asked questions

Does NX Studio support the Z5IIC?

Yes. Support for the Z5IIC was added in version 1.11.0, released on 14 October 2026. Earlier versions do not list it.

Can NX Studio open Canon or Sony RAW files?

The vendor lists only formats shot with its own cameras or saved with its own software. Canon CR3 or Sony ARW are not on that list, so use another editor for them.

Why can the app not preview my N-RAW video?

Thumbnails, preview and playback are not available for N-RAW (.NEV) or R3D NE (.R3D) clips in this version. The same applies to ProRes RAW.

Which HEIF files are supported?

HEIF images with the .hif extension, HDR only. JPEG and TIFF files are supported in RGB mode only.

How do I import from a COOLPIX 990?

Nikon Transfer 2 cannot connect to that camera or to several other early COOLPIX models. Remove the card and copy the files with a card reader, then open them in the program.
