NX Studio review: a capable free RAW editor for one camera brand

This NX Studio review weighs what the free editor does against what it leaves out. The short version: it is the natural first RAW tool for anyone who owns only the camera maker's bodies, and a poor fit for anyone who mixes brands or works mostly with video.

NX Studio earns 7.6 out of 10 as a free RAW editor for owners of the brand's cameras. It processes NEF and NRW files, edits JPEG, TIFF and HEIF images, handles metadata and adds new camera support quickly. It does not open other brands' RAW files, hands video editing to another program and now needs Windows 11 or macOS 14 or later.

Verdict

If every camera you own comes from the same maker, install the free editor before paying for anything else. It reads your RAW files with the vendor's own processing, supports new bodies early and costs nothing. Look elsewhere if you shoot several brands, need a deep catalogue or edit a lot of video.

7.6/10
  • Free, all features in one installer
  • Reads NEF, NRW and NEFX from Z, DSLR, Nikon 1 and COOLPIX cameras
  • Tone curves, brightness and contrast, Picture Controls, metadata editing
  • No RAW support for other brands, video editing is external
  • Windows 11 64 bit or macOS 14 or later only

What NX Studio is

For this NX Studio review the question is simple: is the camera maker's free editor good enough to be your main photo tool? The program combines a viewer, a RAW processor and an editor in one window, and ships with Nikon Transfer 2 for copying pictures off the camera. The vendor positions it as a full set of tools for viewing, processing and editing photos.

This score is not based on benchmarks or timed tests. It is a reading of the documented feature set, the requirements and the release notes as published on 8 November 2026, set against what a buyer of a paid editor would normally expect.

Editing and organising features

The menus follow the same pattern as the camera: Picture Controls you know from the body appear in the adjustments palette, so an image can be reprocessed as if a different setting had been used when it was shot. The how to use guide shows the menu names in order.

R

RAW processing

Processes NEF and NRW RAW files, plus NEFX, with the camera maker's own color rendering and Picture Controls.

T

Tone and contrast

Tone curves and brightness and contrast controls, also usable on JPEG, TIFF and HEIF images.

M

Metadata

Edits XMP and IPTC data and copies location data from one picture to others.

P

Presets

Saves and manages adjustment presets so a look can be reused across a shoot.

W

Web upload

Uploads pictures to web services; the NIKON IMAGE SPACE link ended in 1.11.0 when that service closed.

D

Dust Off

Reads Image Dust Off reference data to remove sensor dust marks recorded by the camera.

Camera and file coverage

Coverage is the program's strongest point. It lists every Z series body, including the Z9, Z8, Zf and ZR, every DSLR from the 1999 D1 to the D780 and the D6, all Nikon 1 cameras and COOLPIX compacts up to the P1100. New bodies arrive in regular updates; 1.11.0 added the Z5IIC. The supported cameras page has the complete list.

The flip side is that only the brand's own formats are listed. If you shoot with a second brand, its RAW files will need another editor.

Where it falls short

Video is the weakest area. Clicking Edit Video opens your system's default video program, and you still have to open the file there yourself. N-RAW, R3D NE and ProRes RAW clips show no thumbnails and no preview, ProRes 422 HQ does not play, and H.265 playback needs a plugin.

Requirements have also tightened. Windows support is limited to preinstalled 64 bit Windows 11, and macOS Ventura was dropped in this release. Several features, from online help to update checks, need an internet connection.

Finally, the vendor publishes no detail on catalogue size limits, AI masking or layers, and the feature description does not mention them. If those matter to you, compare the paid and open source alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Free, with no paid tier or locked features
  • Native processing for NEF and NRW, with camera Picture Controls
  • Fast support for new camera bodies through updates
  • Tone curves and contrast tools also work on JPEG, TIFF and HEIF
  • Metadata, presets and location data copying built in
  • Transfer utility included in the same installer

Cons

  • No RAW support for other camera brands listed
  • Video editing handed off to another program
  • No playback for N-RAW, R3D NE, ProRes RAW or ProRes 422 HQ
  • Windows 11 64 bit only; Windows 10 no longer listed
  • Some features need an internet connection

Who should use it

Use it as your main editor if you shoot only this brand, edit stills rather than video and want the camera's own color without a subscription. Keep it as a companion if you already pay for a multi brand editor: it is useful for checking how the maker renders a file and for reading Picture Controls exactly. Skip it if your computer cannot run Windows 11 or macOS 14. When you are ready, the download page lists both installers.

Try it on your own RAW files

Frequently asked questions

Is NX Studio good for editing RAW files?

For RAW files from the brand's own cameras it is a solid choice: it processes NEF and NRW with the maker's own Picture Controls and offers tone curves and contrast tools. It does not list RAW support for other brands.

Is NX Studio worth it compared with paid editors?

It costs nothing, so the question is what you give up. Paid editors usually add multi brand RAW support and larger catalogue tools; this program focuses on one brand's files and leaves video editing to other software.

Can the program edit video?

Not directly. Edit Video opens the default video application of your operating system, and some formats such as N-RAW, R3D NE and ProRes RAW have no preview at all.

How often is it updated?

The download center shows version 1.10.1 on 18 December 2025 and 1.11.0 on 14 October 2026. Updates typically add new camera bodies and fix reported bugs.

Does the review score come from tests?

No. The score is based on the vendor's published features, requirements and release notes, not on benchmarks. No speed or quality tests were run for this page.
