NX Studio not working? Fixes for install, transfer and playback problems

When NX Studio is not working, the cause is usually one the vendor already documents: missing administrator rights, an unsupported system, a USB hub, a denied macOS permission or an unsupported video format. Here are the fixes, grouped by symptom.

Most NX Studio problems have a documented fix: install from an administrator account with antivirus closed, connect the camera to a built in USB port instead of a hub, allow Keychain and Privacy prompts on macOS, and install the H.265 plugin when asked. Some video formats, such as N-RAW and ProRes RAW, simply have no preview in this version.

The installer fails or will not start

If NX Studio is not working right from installation, check three things the vendor lists. Use an account with administrator rights; on a Mac the installer asks for the administrator password. Close all other applications, including antivirus software, before launching the installer. Confirm the system is supported: preinstalled 64 bit Windows 11, or macOS 14, 15 or 26. Windows 10 and macOS Ventura are not on the list for 1.11.0; the system requirements give the full detail.

Keep at least 1 GB free on the startup disk during installation and while the app runs.

The camera is not recognised

  • Plug the camera into a USB port built into the computer. The vendor says transfers may fail through a USB hub.
  • Check the model: COOLPIX 100 to 990 and the D1, D1X and D1H cannot connect for transfer. Use a card reader.
  • On macOS, if a Keychain Access dialog appears when Nikon Transfer 2 starts, choose Always Allow. Choosing Deny can stop the utility working.
  • On macOS 15.0, Nikon Transfer 2 did not recognise a camera with HEIF images on the card. Updating to macOS 15.1 resolves it, as confirmed in November 2024.
  • Clips saved with the ZR's Video file naming feature cannot be transferred with Nikon Transfer 2; copy them with a card reader.
  • Very large transfers can take a long time. Copy in smaller batches.

macOS permissions denied by mistake

If you declined a permission dialog, the app may behave unexpectedly. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy and turn on the program's check boxes under Photos and Automation. On recent macOS versions the same settings live in System Settings under Privacy & Security.

Other known issues fixed in 1.11.0

Three bugs were fixed in version 1.11.0. Exported images could turn out brighter after certain adjustments to NEF files. Paste Location Data was unavailable when Show RAW and JPEG Pairs as Single Images was on. The Size of Text and Icon setting did not reach the slideshow dialog. If you see any of these, update from the download page.

The link with NIKON IMAGE SPACE no longer works because that service has ended; this is not a fault on your computer. Online help, sign in and update checks need an internet connection, so check your network if those fail. The how to use guide shows where each of these settings lives.

Running an older version?

Several of these bugs are fixed in 1.11.0. Get the current installer from the vendor.

Frequently asked questions

Why does NX Studio not recognise my camera?

The most common documented causes are a USB hub between camera and computer, an early camera model that cannot connect, or a denied macOS Keychain or Privacy prompt. Use a built in USB port or a card reader and allow the prompts.

Why are my exported RAW images brighter than the preview?

A bug made exports brighter after certain adjustments to NEF files. It was fixed in version 1.11.0, so update to the current release.

Why does my H.265 video not play?

Playback of H.265 video from the brand's cameras needs a plugin. The program shows on screen instructions to install it when you open such a clip.

Why did the NIKON IMAGE SPACE upload disappear?

The link was removed in 1.11.0 because the NIKON IMAGE SPACE service ended. Upload to other services or export files and share them another way.

Can I install it with antivirus running?

The vendor asks you to exit other applications, including antivirus software, before launching the installer. Turn protection back on once installation finishes.
