NX Studio alternatives: other RAW editors for photos from Nikon cameras

NX Studio alternatives matter when you shoot more than one camera brand, need a larger catalogue or edit a lot of video. This page lists six editors worth a look and explains what the free program already covers, so you only switch for a reason.

This site is independent and is not run by or affiliated with Nikon Corporation. The program is a free download, and this site earns nothing when you download it. All facts were read on downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com on 8 November 2026.

The main NX Studio alternatives are Adobe Lightroom Classic, Capture One, DxO PhotoLab and ON1 Photo RAW as paid editors, and darktable and RawTherapee as free open source ones. Switch if you shoot several camera brands or need features the free program does not document; if you shoot only one brand's cameras, it already reads your RAW files at no cost.

When to look at NX Studio alternatives

Before comparing NX Studio alternatives, be clear about what the free program does. It processes NEF, NRW and NEFX files with the camera maker's own Picture Controls, edits JPEG, TIFF and HEIF with tone curves and contrast tools, manages metadata and presets, and supports new bodies quickly. The review scores it at 7.6 out of 10 on that basis.

The documented gaps are narrower: only the brand's own RAW formats are listed, video editing is handed to another program, and the current version needs Windows 11 or macOS 14 or later. If none of those affect you, there is little reason to switch.

Free and open source editors

Both read RAW files from many brands. They may not support a camera released in the last few months, because support for new bodies arrives in their own updates. The camera maker's program usually covers a new body first; 1.11.0 added the Z5IIC. Check the supported cameras list if you own a very new model.

  • darktable: a free, open source RAW editor and photo manager for Windows, macOS and Linux.
  • RawTherapee: a free, open source RAW processor with detailed demosaicing and color controls.

Using two editors together

Many photographers keep the free program installed next to a paid editor. It costs nothing, reads Picture Controls exactly as the camera recorded them, and is a quick way to check how the maker renders a file. Nothing stops you from processing in one and cataloguing in another. If that suits you, the download page has the current installer.

Start with the free option

Install the camera maker's editor first and only pay for another if you hit a documented limit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to NX Studio?

darktable and RawTherapee are the two best known free, open source RAW editors. Both read RAW files from many camera brands, which the free maker program does not.

Is Lightroom Classic better than NX Studio?

It does more as a catalogue and reads many brands, but it is a paid subscription. If you shoot only one brand and do not need a large catalogue, the free program may be enough.

Do alternatives support new Nikon bodies right away?

Not always. Third party editors add new cameras in their own updates, which can lag behind a camera's release. The maker's own program, for example, added the Z5IIC in version 1.11.0.

Were the prices of these alternatives checked?

No. This page does not list prices because they change often and were not verified for it. Check each vendor's pricing page before buying.

Can I use NX Studio and another editor at the same time?

Yes. The program is free and works on folders of files, so it can sit next to any other editor. Keep edits in one program per file to avoid confusion.
